SUMMER NEWSLETTER
Things to Prepare this summer
After Junior Year - SENIOR YEAR:
| |
- Continue to gather
information from a variety of sources, research in depth
your college, and visit colleges. Schedule interviews if
offered, visit classes, meet with professors and coaches
if possible.
|
- Begin the application
process: read and follow all instructions carefully;
complete the general information on the application;
write drafts of required essays; make a list
of your co-curricular activities and volunteer and work
experiences, using the format required on the
application (I’d be happy to help you develop an
Activity List); collect writing samples and prepare
portfolios and audition tapes, if appropriate.
- Complete the NCAA
Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse form, available your
College Counseling office if you hope to play Division I
or II sports in college.
- Begin to narrow your
list of colleges, making sure that your list includes
two or more to which you are likely to be admitted.

Special
Advice for Sophomores:
You can
really get a head start on college preparation. Start by developing
two lists for each year of high school; one for the courses you plan
to take to prepare for college; the other for activities out side
the classroom. Update these lists twice a year.
During
this year, students should begin thinking about the colleges they
might like to attend. They should look at some college brochures or
web sites and even visit colleges. It is not too soon to talk to
representatives at college fairs or college nights. It is also the
year for students to target the activities which they will
concentrate on in high school because colleges look at students’
depth of commitment to activities.
-
Review your academic program to insure it meets college entrance
requirements.
-
Upgrade your reading program and continue following it
throughout the year.
-
Select your activities. Make sure they are interesting to you.
-
Consider taking the PLAN or the PSAT in the fall.
-
Read
and study test preparation books.
-
Get
your parents involved in appropriate school activities.
-
Get to know
your counselor.
I wish you a safe and fun summer.
